An East Tennessee bank is receiving a national award after lending a helping hand to an employee and wife of a wounded veteran.

The Department of Defense presented an award to Suntrust Bank for supporting Stephanie Trost after her husband was shot close to a half-dozen times earlier this year in Afghanistan.

The presentation took place at the Maryville Springbrook Branch Tuesday afternoon.

Trost was shot while helping to build a school in Afghanistan
back in February.

Stephanie Trost is a branch manager and assistant vice president for Suntrust in Alcoa.

"It was very emotionally and spiritually important. They really help me up during that crisis. It was really an amazing journey. I couldn't have done it without them," she said.

Master Sergeant Trost returned to his home in Maryville back in June. Before that he was treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington.

He lost his thumb and forefinger and has trouble walking.

The community worked to renovate his home to make it easier for him to move around.
