Maryville tops Alcoa in ESPN-televised game

ESPN brought one of East Tennessee's best rivalries to the national stage on Sunday afternoon.

Maryville and Alcoa moved their annual match-up to a noon kickoff on Sunday to accommodate ESPN.

About 9,000 fans were in attendance to witness two of the state's best programs playing in front of a national audience.

Maryville came out on top, defeating Alcoa 42-24.

Shawn Prevo started the scoring with a touchdown run to put the Rebels up 7-0. Alcoa later took a 14-7 lead but Maryville tied things up just before halftime when Logan Winders made an outstanding diving catch in the back corner of the endzone.

The Tornadoes led 24-21 late in the game but Nick Myers pushed across the goal line on a quarterback sneak to put Maryville back on top.

The ensuing kickoff bounced off the back of an Alcoa player and was recovered by Maryville. The Rebels converted the turnover into a touchdown and pulled away for the 42-24 victory.

The win extends Maryville's winning streak to 31 games. The Rebels last loss came against Alcoa in the first game of the 2010 season.

Maryville quarterback Nick Myers was named MVP of the game. The senior completed 10-of-16 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns and added 36 yards and two scores on the ground.
