Maple Lane Farms' Corn maze opens Friday

Maryville College graduate Bob Schmidt has supported his alma mater in different ways over the years.

This fall, he's transformed 10 acres of Maple Lane Farms in Greenback. It is a corn maze in the shape of Anderson Hall bell tower image, a distinctive building on the Maryville College campus.

Maple Lane Farms' 14th Annual Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch will open to the public Friday September 14th and continue through Halloween.

Non-profit children's ministry displaced by Maryville fire

When Missy Johnson saw her office building Monday morning, she says she started to pray.

An early morning fire badly damaged the Law Building near Downtown Maryville.

For about a year, Johnson has been working for non-profit Kingdom Design Ministries out of a basement office.

"We do dream room make-overs for children who've experienced some devastation," said Johnson.

Firefighters estimate between 80,000-100,000 gallons of water rained down on the building as they tried for hours to extinguish all the hot spots.

Some golfers live on a golf course, some boaters live on a lake, and some East Tennesseans live on a runway.

Thomas Clanton's enjoys living at Montvale Airpark in Maryville.

"I've got a lot of flight ratings and I've always worked around airports. I just love it. I'm living my dream now," he said.

People park their planes at their houses instead of at rented hangars.

"It makes it so convenient. You can pull it out and fly it right here at the house," Clanton said.

Flu season is just around the corner, and already drug stores and doctor's offices have supplies of this year's vaccine.

The shots will be available to patients by the end of the month.

But if you get your shot now, will you be protected all season? The Centers for Disease Control says "yes."

The CDC recommends that people get their shots as soon as possible. It suggests everyone from six months old and older get a yearly vaccine.

Admissions suspended at Maryville nursing home

Admissions suspended at Maryville nursing home

Admissions have been suspended at a Blount County nursing home.

According to the Tennessee Department of Health, no new residents may be admitted at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation-Fairpark until certain violations are corrected.  In addition, a federal civil penalty has also been imposed at $6,000 a day until the violations are corrected. A special monitor has been appointed to review the facility's operations.

Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation-Fairpark is a 75-bed licensed nursing home located at 307 North Fifth Street in Maryville.

John Sevier Elementary among SCORE finalists

SCORE is out with its 12 finalists for the second annual SCORE prize award.

Each year, one elementary, middle and high school, along with one school district in Tennessee receive the award for the most dramatically improved student achievement.

Some East Tennessee schools are among the finalists. They include John Sevier Elementary in Maryville and Pigeon Forge Primary in Sevier County.

Hamblen and Maryville are both finalists for best district. Maryville won that title last year.

Individual school winners will get $10,000. The winning district will get $25,000.

Maryville Marine returns home to grand welcome

A Maryville Marine who's been in Afghanistan since January got a warm welcome home Monday.

Cpl. Jonathan Blake is back in East Tennessee on a 14-day leave.

A group of family and friends waited for him and welcomed him home when he got off the plane at McGhee Tyson Airport.

His wife flew in to see him all the way from Camp Pendleton, California, where the couple is stationed.

Corporal Blake said he's been looking forward to seeing his wife and family.
