Blount Co. Animal Center performs 1,000th spay/neuter surgery

The Blount County Animal Center is celebrating a milestone in its efforts to fight animal overpopulation.

The center performed its 1,000th spay or neuter surgery Friday morning, on a three-year-old shepherd mix named Trip.

The animal center performed its first spay/neuter surgery in January, and has performed about 25 a week each Friday since then.

Volunteers say the surgeries are important to the whole community.

"It's very important. The animal overpopulation problem is a huge one and we're doing what we can here to try to reduce that," said volunteer veterinarian Dr. Jeanette Drapo,

As a special gift to Trip for being the 1,000th surgery, the animal center is waiving his adoption fee and providing a special gift package to the family that gives him a new home.
