Kahli Reynolds said the ad on Craigslist for a Seymour rental house was perfect. It fit her budget, utilities included, and pets were allowed.

It was almost too good to be true.

"It fit everything we wanted, it was in the right area, everything sounded great with it," Reynolds said.

She came to find out it was.

Last week, she discovered that her family was among five different families promised the same house following a rental scheme costing familiesmore than $5,000 in rental money.

On Sunday, Beth Joy Economos, 43, was arrested in Jefferson County in connection with the scam.

Reynolds said even as she knew that she was not getting the home, Economos still pleaded to her that she would make good on the deal.

"I told her if she would not return my money to me, I was going to call the cops. And she begged me not to," she said. " 'I'll make it up to you. I'll make it right.' "

The actual homeowner, Jonathan Matthews, told 10News that Economos lived in the house in question for two months, and did not know about the ad. Matthews is also listed as a victim in a Blount County Sheriff''s Office report.

Deputies added that Economos promised Reynolds another house to make up for what she said was an error -- another house that Matthews also owned.

Economos will be in Blount County Circuit Court on 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Reynolds does not believe she'll ever see the $1,000 back.

"There's no way I could believe her saying this. If it was two families, maybe she might have got something confused. But five families? No way."
