K-9 tracks suspected drunk driver down in doghouse
News

An Alcoa police dog tracked down a wanted suspect-- who was hiding in a doghouse.

It happened Sunday on Grant Street in Alcoa, according to the police report. Witnesses told officers that a woman driving an orange Saturn had crashed into two parked cars, hit a woman who was trying to help her, then fled the scene.

The driver first hit a car parked on the left side of the road, then crossed over and hit one parked on the other. A neighbor heard the crash and went out to check on the driver.

She told the officer that the woman was bleeding from the mouth, and asked her not to call police because she didn't have a license. The driver then backed into the neighbor, knocking her to the ground, drove through a yard down the street, parked her car, and took off on foot.

A K-9 officer and his dog tracked the woman to a doghouse she'd climbed into in the backyard of a nearby home.

The officers said Nissa Broadway, 28, of Maryville, was slurring her speech and smelled like alcohol. She admitted she had been drinking, and was driving a on revoked licence because of a past DUI conviction.

Broadway was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular assault, driving on a revoked license, and implied consent.

The neighbor who was hit by the car was taken by ambulance to Blount Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for bruising on her wrist and leg and a cut to her ankle.
