Structural problems close Townsend library | News
(WBIR-TOWNSEND) Building issues have forced the closure of the Townsend library.
The Mary Tippitt Library is housed in a building owned by the Tuckaleechee Utility District. The utility recently found cracks between the concrete blocks of the building.
Officials advised the library to close until the issues can be fixed.
It's up the utility board to determine what action will be taken, and they won't meet again for another couple of weeks.
Charles Tippitt says the library is named after his first wife, who died in the 1990s.
"Her dream was that someday we could offer library service to the children of townsend and to the people," said Tippit.
In addition to providing books for locals, Tippitt says the library is a spot where tourists often stop to use the free wi-fi.
He hopes it will reopen soon.
