Alcoa Police have charged a Maryville man with DUI after he slammed his car into a gas station on Thursday morning.

Investigators say Richard Doyle, 51, was pulling into the Marathon gas station on Louisville Road when he hit the gas instead of the brake.  Doyle is accused of driving through a window at the front of the store.

A customer sitting in a booth inside was showered with glass, and had to be taken to the hospital for stitches. Officers said he had several cuts on his side, arms, and hands.

Sandy leaves record snow and silver lining in Smokies

East Tennessee was spared the brunt of the devastating storm.  The main impact in our region was record-setting snow in the higher elevations.

Newfound Gap Road now open in the Smokies

Visitors can now enjoy the winter wonderland in Newfound Gap.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers reopened Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Rd.) shortly after 1 pm on Wednesday.  It has been closed since more than two feet of snow fell in the higher elevations of the Smokies this week.

The view from the top is always incredible, but now, it's even more so with all that snow.  Visitors were waiting at the gate to drive up to see the snow.

Biggest October snowfall on record in Newfound Gap, and still snowing

Biggest October snowfall on record in Newfound Gap, and still snowing

Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park believe this is the biggest snowfall on record for the month of October.

So far, 14-16 inches of snow has fallen at Newfound Gap, which is right at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line.  There are snow drifts about four feet deep, and winds around 35 mph.

Newfound Gap usually receives about 4 inches of snow this time of year, so this is very out of the ordinary.

No park visitors can enjoy the scenery at Newfound Gap right now, however, because the road to area is closed.

Robin Vanleigh is sort of lucky, "I'm going from here to Chicago to Phoenix."

She's not headed to the Northeast, but she's still worried about her flight plan.

"So far, everything is on time, but since I am flying into Chicago and Sandy is making her way closer and closer, I am getting a little concerned that I might get stuck there," explained Robin.
